Access to Work for Self-Employed People: A Guide to Practical Business Support
When you're self-employed, you're rarely responsible for just one job.
Alongside the work you actually started your business to do, you're often the person managing the finances, marketing, administration, operations, client communications and everything else that keeps things running.
It's a lot of hats to wear, and that's before considering the additional challenges that living with a disability or health condition can bring.
For some people, tasks such as organising information, managing deadlines or keeping on top of administration can take considerably more time and energy. Not because they're any less capable of running a business, but because certain aspects of working can require additional support.
That's where Access to Work (A2W) may be able to help.
Yet many self-employed people are unaware that the scheme exists, aren't sure whether they qualify, or assume that because they're managing, they shouldn't apply.
In this guide, we'll explore what Access to Work is, who may be eligible and how practical business support might fit into an individual's approved arrangements.
What is Access to Work?
Access to Work (A2W) is a government-funded scheme delivered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It helps eligible people with disabilities or physical or mental health conditions get into or stay in work, including self-employment.
Depending on individual circumstances and assessed needs, Access to Work may provide financial support towards:
Support workers for practical, work-related assistance.
Specialist equipment or assistive technology to make tasks more accessible.
Travel costs where a disability makes travelling to work more difficult.
Workplace adaptations and other disability-related support.
Mental health support to help people manage challenges at work.
The support available and amount awarded depend on each person's circumstances and assessment. Access to Work grants do not need to be repaid and do not affect other benefits.
The scheme is available in England, Scotland and Wales, with separate arrangements in Northern Ireland.
For full details, visit the official GOV.UK Access to Work guidance.
Who can apply for Access to Work?
Access to Work isn't limited to people working for an employer. Self-employed professionals, freelancers and business owners may also be eligible.
Generally, you must:
Have a disability or physical or mental health condition that affects your ability to work.
Be aged 16 or over.
Live and work in England, Scotland or Wales.
Be in paid work, about to start work or meet the relevant self-employment requirements.
For self-employed applicants, the DWP also considers whether the business is financially viable. You may need to provide business accounts or a business plan, alongside your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).
You don't necessarily need to be struggling with every aspect of your work to explore support. The important question is how your disability or health condition affects particular work-related activities.
How do you apply?
You can apply online or by telephone through GOV.UK.
The process generally involves:
Submitting an application, explaining your work and how your condition affects it.
Discussing your needs with an Access to Work adviser, who may arrange a workplace assessment.
Receiving a decision outlining any approved support, funding and conditions.
Applications and funding decisions are handled by the DWP, not by individual support providers.
Check eligibility and apply through GOV.UK.
What practical business support could Access to Work fund?
Running a business involves far more than delivering your service or product. There's planning, communication, administration, organisation and countless small tasks competing for your attention.
For someone with a disability or health condition, some of these responsibilities may create additional barriers.
Where an individual has been assessed as needing a support worker, their award may cover practical assistance with certain work-related activities, such as:
Organising information, documents and workflows.
Managing agreed administrative tasks and communications.
Keeping track of deadlines, appointments and priorities.
Supporting planning, scheduling and task organisation.
Helping maintain agreed systems and processes.
These are examples of activities that might be relevant to an individual's support needs, rather than a list of automatically funded services.
Access to Work is designed to address disability-related barriers, not ordinary business running costs. The DWP determines which activities and costs are eligible.
What about ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions?
For some neurodivergent business owners, particularly those with ADHD, challenges with executive functioning can make aspects of running a business more demanding.
Working memory, prioritisation, task initiation, switching between responsibilities and managing competing demands can all affect how someone works.
But everyone's experience is different.
A person might be highly skilled, experienced and confident in their profession while finding particular administrative or organisational responsibilities disproportionately difficult.
Having practical support in those areas isn't about taking away someone's independence or capability. It's about finding ways of working that recognise individual needs and make work more accessible.
How can Capable Co. help?
At Capable Co., we believe business support should be built around the person receiving it, rather than expecting everyone to work in the same way.
We provide thoughtful, practical support across executive assistance, business administration, operations and systems, helping business owners manage the responsibilities that sit alongside their core work.
We also have experience working with neurodivergent professionals and understand the importance of clear communication, flexible approaches and systems that work in real life.
For individuals with an Access to Work award that includes relevant support worker provision, Capable Co. may be able to provide practical business and administrative assistance within their approved arrangements.
We begin by understanding what support has been agreed, what you need help with and how we can work together effectively.
Our usual service rates apply, and we'll discuss the scope and hours of support available within your funding and any additional budget you choose to contribute.
Capable Co. is an independent business support provider. We are not affiliated with the DWP and cannot assess eligibility, approve funding or guarantee that a particular service will be covered.
